Darcy Loy Greenwood, 78, of La Crosse, died on Monday, April 27, 2020, at Mayo Clinic Health System – Franciscan Healthcare La Crosse.
He was born on January 30, 1942, in La Crosse, the son of Marvin and Goldie (Selke) Greenwood. He graduated from La Crescent Grade School in 1956 and La Crosse Central High School in 1960. He married and divorced; on December 20, 1980, he married Marilyn (Johnson) who preceded him in death on May 22, 2007.
He worked a short time after high school for the Milwaukee Railroad in La Crescent, Minn. He served in the U.S. Army for three years, serving in the Signal Corp in Turkey, and was honorably discharged in 1965. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 595, La Crescent, Minn. Darcy worked briefly for both La Crescent Furniture Mart and truck driving for Furniture Express, Fort Atkinson, Wis. He worked for Ross of La Crosse for 32 years, both delivering furniture and installing carpet. He and his coworker were highly sought after carpet installers. He later worked for Chartwells Dining Services at the University of Wisconsin La Crosse where the students thoroughly enjoyed Darc’s company and quick wit.
At a young age he was a pinsetter and won the grand prize of a bowling ball when Shamrock Lanes opened in La Crescent, where he bowled with the Legion team. Darcy especially enjoyed a good game of cards — 500 and pinochle — and the Greenwood luck was always with him. He was part of the Legion District One champion baseball team in 1956, pole vaulted in high school, and boxed while in the service and as a participant in Golden Gloves boxing. He participated in softball and pumpkin ball bar leagues, was a great pool shot, enjoyed craps, a good dice shake, and became an avid golfer. For many years, you could find him with his dad manning the chicken-Q grill throughout the area or with friends at a stone grill they constructed in Burns Valley. Furthermore, Darcy cherished family memories at both Selke and Greenwood family reunions, as a father, as a brother, as an uncle, as a cousin, and as a wonderful dog owner (especially to his Sheba).
He is survived by one son, Gary (Lonnie) Greenwood of Milwaukee, Wis.; two daughters, Christie (Ed) Sullivan of Denver, Colo., and Elizabeth (Peter) Shaar of Seattle, Wash.; six grandchildren; two brothers, Kevin (Sue) Greenwood of La Crescent, Minn., and Leonard (Janis Smith) Greenwood of La Crescent, Minn.; one sister, Kerryl (Russ) Greenwood-Quaintance of Winona, Minn.; and great-grandchildren, aunt, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
