Kurth, Joel Frederick

Joel Frederick Kurth, age 54, of Winona, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, October 17, 2020, at his home.

Joel was born on April 15, 1966, in Winona, to Carl and Marlys (Oldendorf) Kurth, and attended Winona Senior High School where he enjoyed playing hockey. He married Wendy Olson, and although they later divorced, they remained friends and raised two beautiful children, Justine and Alex. Joel was extremely proud of Justine and Alex, especially that they were both able to attend college.

He was employed with Land O’Lakes in Rochester, Benchmark Electronics, and most recently with Peerless Chain.

Joel will be remembered for his love of sports, and he was an avid fan of the Vikings, Twins, and Wild. He also enjoyed fishing, biking and walking around Lake Winona, ‘80s rock music, and he never missed an estate sale or a chance to go antiquing.

Although he will be deeply missed, Joel’s family would like to acknowledge that, as an eye and tissue donor, he gave the most precious gift anyone could give, and that he will live on in his gift to better the lives of his fellow man.

Joel is lovingly survived by his daughter, Justine Kurth, and her fiancé, Cody Rieck, and his daughter, Natalie Marie Rieck-Blue; son, Alex Kurth; parents, Carl and Marlys Kurth; sister, Lisa (Tim Leisen) Schossow; nieces and nephews, Jarad Schossow, Jordan (Elizabeth) Schossow, and Shayla Schossow; several great-nieces and great-nephews; as well as other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents; and his best friend, Scott Connaughty.

A celebration of Joel’s life will be held from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 25, 2020, at the Watkowski-Mulyck Funeral Home, 376 East Sarnia Street in Winona. Those attending are encouraged to wear their ‘80s hair band, Twins, Vikings, or Wild apparel. The wearing of a mask will be required, and social distancing guidelines will be followed for the gathering.

A memorial is being arranged.
