Winona wrestlers split triangular at home


The Winona Senior High School wrestling squad hosted a triangular meet on Thursday, January 10, featuring Mankato West and Rochester John Marshall at Winona Senior High School.

Winona came up short in the first meet of the evening against Mankato West, 42-40. After building a nice lead in the early going, Winona had to forfeit a number of weight classes in the middle and upper weights. Evan Maurud (106#), Ryan Henningson, (126#), and Evann Fabian (138#) all recorded pins for the Winhawks while Logan Henningson (120#) won by a major decision before Mankato West dominated the middle weights. Trevor Pomeroy (170#) won by a pin before Winona had to forfeit at 182# and 195#. Tyler Nachtigal and Zander Rusert finished up with pins, but the meet was just out of reach.

In the final meet, Winona dominated Rochester John Marshall by a score of 60-18. Maurud opened the dual with a fall in 3:24, with Ryan Henningson, Fabian, Nachtigal, and Rusert (10 seconds) all picking up quick pins. Ricardo Castanon had the match of the evening going after his opponent with three takedowns in the first period before securing the fall. Castanon almost scored a takedown on Mankato West two-time state champion Charlie Pickell in his first match. Maurud also had an outstanding night for the ‘hawks, recording two pins on the night.

On Saturday, January 12, the wrestlers took part in the Plainview Tournament, taking fifth place out of 15 teams. Ryan Henningson and Pomeroy both dominated their weight classes and are on the way to championships. Nachtigal took runner-up honors while Ethan Speltz, Logan Henningson, and Fabian placed third and Rusert took fourth.
