‘Spring into Art’ event boxes available at Minnesota Marine Art Museum

The Minnesota Marine Art Museum (MMAM) is offering 275 free “event boxes” intended to replace its popular arts access program Seasonal Saturdays, until it is safe to resume large indoor gatherings. An event box includes adapted art elements from the onsite program for use at home by adults and older children. Since MMAM cannot welcome large crowds at this time, the event box also includes $1 admission reservations for recipients to come visit MMAM at their leisure.

In addition to the discounted admission, the event box includes a “paper tour” of three artworks in the collection, a special activity to play as a group, a small art-making activity, a music playlist to accompany the activities, and a small snack. “We’re hoping folks can take a break from their screens by creating a mini-Seasonal Saturday experience at their house and connecting with each other over art,” says Heather Casper, MMAM curator of education.

Once it is safe to do so, Seasonal Saturdays (formerly known as Second Saturdays) will be offered quarterly on select Saturdays four times a year, or once each season. MMAM hopes to resume in-person programming in early 2022. This year, MMAM will offer 275 event boxes per season: spring, summer, and fall. Each group of boxes will be released at the beginning of the season. People can begin registering for the “Spring into Art” event box on March 1 and can pick up and use their box and discounted admission throughout the spring season — which will end on May 31.

Casper says: “Art is for everyone. The Minnesota Marine Art Museum is committed to making our space accessible to everyone, regardless of economic means, background, or artistic experience. We hope this box can bring a little bit of joy while people use them at home and provide for a better museum experience once inside the galleries.”

Free transportation to and from the Minnesota Marine Art Museum is available through Winona Area Transit Service’s Dial-A-Ride. Call 507-474-6666 to schedule your ride a few days before you plan to visit and MMAM will pay your fare upon arrival and provide you with return fare.

The event box is best enjoyed by groups of 2-6 people, but parties of one are welcome to register for a box. There is a one-box limit per household or quarantine bubble, and supplies are available first come, first served. To learn more and register for an event box, visit MMAM’s website at mmam.org/seasonal-saturdays  or call 507-474-6626.

Discounted admission and event boxes are made possible by an Arts Access grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, WNB Financial, and Winona Community Fund. The Water Main is the media sponsor for Seasonal Saturdays. MMAM Executive Director Nicole Chamberlain Dupree says, “We are so grateful to have leaders in our region who are dedicated to supporting the community and MMAM’s mission of arts access.”

There is always something new to experience at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum, your nonprofit art museum that engages visitors in meaningful visual art experiences through education and exhibitions that explore the ongoing and historic human relationship with water.
