Captain Chad Brown celebrates retirement


Captain Chad Brown, formerly of Winona, is celebrating his retirement after a successful career in the military.

He joined the Navy in 1987 under the Nuclear Power Officer Candidate (NUPOC) program while attending the University of Minnesota. Following graduation with a Bachelor of Science in physics, he reported to Officer Candidate School in Newport, R.I., where he received his commission. In 1997 he was awarded a Master’s in business administration from the University of Nebraska and in 2006 he completed Joint Military Professional Education requirements and was awarded a Master’s in national security from the Air War College.

Captain Brown’s sea tours include division officer assignments aboard USS Baltimore (SSN 704) stationed out of Norfolk, Va.; engineer officer aboard USS Georgia (SSBN 729) (BLUE) stationed out of Bangor, Wash.; executive officer aboard USS Pittsburgh (SSN 720) stationed out of Groton, Conn.; and commanding officer aboard USS Augusta (SSN 710) stationed out of Groton, Conn., and Norfolk, Va.

His shore tours include assignments as ballistic missile defense analyst at U.S. Strategic Command located in Bellevue, Neb.; executive officer for Moored Training Ship 635 located in Charleston, S.C.; future plans deputy at U.S. Second Fleet located in Norfolk, Va.; deputy commander for Submarine Squadron 11 located in San Diego, Calif.; deputy commander for Task Force 69 located in Naples, Italy; and director of future plans at U.S. Fleet Forces Command located in Norfolk, Va. At retirement, Captain Brown serves as the department head for training, exercises, and war games at Navy Warfare Development Command located in Norfolk, Va.

His personal awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and various campaign and unit awards.

Captain Brown is married to former Suzanne Geronime of Rosemount, Minn. Together they have two children, Duncan and Corinne.
