An Ode to the evergreens

From: Tabitha Mulkey

As the maples

are dressing themselves

in purples and reds

and the dying ashes

paint themselves

with sunshine colors

and the oaks

are blushing in red-browns

as the cottonwoods are

shyly changing their crowns

mustard yellow

and then suddenly go brown and

fall, fall to the ground

while all this is happening

the evergreens

are ever as green

stubbornly staying their rightful color

refusing to sleep

and as the snow falls around them

I wonder

if they ever regret their decision

to keep their colors

yet they remain still
