The historic downtown Winona tour features Winona’s amazing architecture, with surprising stories. How many banks do you know with a safari museum? Originally Winona Savings Bank, the WNB Financial building was designed by Chicago architect George W. Maher. He also designed several other buildings in Winona, including Watkins. The daughter of JR Watkins, Grace and her husband EL King started the bank. The Egyptian Revival building not only holds a bank, but the couple’s gun collection and stuffed African animals from their safaris.

Winona’s Windom Park Historic District is made up of some of Winona’s grandest homes and, of course, Windom Park with the Wenonah statue. The park’s namesake is the only Minnesotan to be on currency. His great grandson of the same name is the actor William Windom who played the prosecuting attorney in “To Kill a Mockingbird,” acted in the “Star Trek” and “Twilight Zone” series, “Murder She Wrote” and more. We also take a look at the grand homes that surround the park and the stories of their builders and past owners.
