Mary Knight passed away on Friday, October 1, 2021, at Westminster Towers in Orlando, Fla., ending her lengthy struggle with dementia, just a few months short of her 98th birthday.
Mary was born on November 29, 1923, to Otto and Mary Metzger, the youngest of three children. She lived her childhood years on the farm in “Old Woodbury.” Her adult years were spent in various positions with the South Washington County Schools, and as superintendent of Sunday schools at the Newport Methodist Church for 20 years. Her working career ended as the executive secretary to the president of Conwed Corp. in St. Paul, Minn.
On February 19, 1944, she married her childhood sweetheart James Knight in Newport, Minn. Following Jim’s service obligation, they established residency in Newport. They were blessed with three children. David (Cheryl) Knight, of Winona, Kathleen (Michael) Nelson, of Arizona, and Deborah Knight (partner Joe Corcione), of Florida. Jim and Mary enjoyed their retirement years in their beautiful home at LaCasa in North Port, Fla.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, in November 2004; and by her brother, Paul Metzger; and sister, Janet Dibrell. She is survived by her three children; six grandchildren, Kristi Knight, of Winona, Chris (Alison) Mayer, of Winona, Kat Thoeny, of Brandon, Fla., Jesse Nelson and Megan Nelson, of Duluth, Minn., and James Peloquin, of Northfield Minn.; three great-grandchildren, Ally (Trevor) Haedtke, of Winona, Justin (Celina) Nachtweih, of Texas, and Mason Reimann, of Coon Rapids, Minn., and four great-great-grandchildren she unfortunately never had the chance to meet, Justin and Celina’s children, Jasmine, Sophia, Grant and baby Mila.
At Mary’s request, there will be no memorial service or visitation. She will be interred with her husband, Jim at Christ United Methodist Church in Venice, Fla.
