“It’s not a big deal.” Unfortunately, that is a common misconception I hear from many young patients about vaping. All debates about the safety of vaping liquids and chemicals aside (I have concerns but will keep that for another day) I still have a major concern about vaping in young people – smoking tobacco. Those who use vaping products are at a 3.5 times risk of using tobacco products later in life compared to those who have never used vaping products. That is a scary thought, especially since it is well-established

that smoking tobacco is without a doubt a dangerous endeavor. Two out of three of people who are chronic smokers will die of a tobacco-related disease such as cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or heart disease. Two thirds, 66 percent!

Even if vaping products were 100-percent safe but still led to more than three times increased tobacco usage, that is enough for me to warn our young people to avoid them. For youth to realize that starting to use a vaping product today could mean becoming a lifetime cigarette user in the future.
